JUNIOR INSTRUCTOR TRAINING |
Junior Instructor Training begins January 2012 The Snowstar J.I.T. program is free and open to current members that are in high school. Snowboarders must be in the Carver level or above. Skiers must be in the Duster level or above. We use a combination of materials from the Snowstar teaching manual and PSIA/AASI (Professional Ski Instructors of America/American Association of Snowboard Instructors) as a learning guide. The materials provide knowledge to help develop the essential skills necessary to teach beginning students. The J.I.T. program consists of 4 sessions on Saturdays. Each session is 1 1/2 hours and consists of on and off snow training. Junior Instructor Trainees will also have the opportunity to shadow a regular class as part of the training. It is suggested that the student also attend their regular classes throughout the training. There is a written test and “on snow” evaluation at the end of the program. Upon successful completion of the program you will be invited to become an apprentice Snowstar instructor next season. Here's
a letter we received from one of our instructors about his daughter
who went through our J.I.T. program, became an instructor with us
and has now gone off to college: Hi Guys Cool story..... Yesterday, Mary called me from college in Missouri. She just started her freshman year at Mizzuo / Columbia as a Journalism major with a Business minor. She just got the on-campus job of her dreams, running the clothing dept. at the campus bookstore. The interviewer said her experience as a snowboard instructor indicated she had leadership and communications skills superior to all of the other candidates. It moved her to the top of the candidate list. Once in the interview, her comfort in dealing with adults convinced them to make an offer on the spot. I sometimes don't think that our young instructors completely realize there's such significant long term benefit way beyond the Snowstar paycheck. It's a story I'll share. Fred Silloway |
